DePaul Splits Day One at Palmer Park Clash

Blue Demons blank Saint Francis before falling in six innings to Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – DePaul posted a 1-1 mark on the first day of the Palmer Park Clash on the campus of the University of Virginia. The Blue Demons blanked Saint Francis 4-0 in the weekend opener before falling to the host Hoos 9-1 in six innings.
 
Against the Red Flash, Brooke Johnson led the way with a two-for-three day and a pair of RBI while Alexis Houge and Payton Viles were also credited with RBI as six different Blue Demons tallied at least one hit.
 
Freshman pitcher Bella Nigey picked up the complete game shutout in the circle surrendering just four hits while striking out four batters to earn her third win of the season.
 
In the second game of the day, the Blue Demons allowed Virginia to score a run apiece in each of the first three innings and couldn't recover from the slow start. Anna Wohlers notched her team-best fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning to put the Blue Demons on the board. Wohlers went three-for-three on the outing.
 
A trio of Virginia doubles paired with two DePaul errors allowed the hosts to explode for five runs in the sixth inning and claim the victory.
 
In the circle, Brenna Smith went four and a third innings giving up four runs on seven hits before Katey Pierce enter in relief, facing six batters and allowing five runs, two of which were earned.
