Blue Demons snap eight-game skid with first win of BIG EAST play
QUEENS, N.Y. – DePaul picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over St. John's at Red Storm Field. Seven different Blue Demons tallied at least one hit while right-hander Bella Nigey and the defense behind her allowed just three hits for the fourth time on the 2023 campaign.
Anna Wohlers continued her hot streak of hitting with a two-for-four outing including a leadoff home run in the first inning. Freshman Alexis Houge tallied a pair of base knocks while Addison Talbot provided the insurance with a two-RBI double in the fourth inning.
Nigey went the complete game in the circle, surrendering just one run while striking out four batters, to claim her fifth win of the season.
How It Happened
The first at bat of the contest saw Wohlers send the pitch far beyond the right field wall to give the Blue Demons an early one-run lead behind her eighth home run of the season.
St. John's ( 12-14, 4-2 BIG EAST) threatened with runners in scoring position in the home half of the frame before Nigey induced an infield pop up to end the inning.
Tori Meyer began the fourth inning with a leadoff single up the middle before Grace Frazier laid a bunt down to put two on with zero outs. Carly Alvers moved the runners with a sac bunt for Talbot to lift a double to deep right field and put the Blue Demons in front 3-0.
The Red Storm loaded the bases in the sixth inning on a base hit, DePaul error and a drawn walk for Anese Thompson to send a single to right field and get the Red Storm on the board. A pair of routine defensive plays would follow to end the inning and prevent further runs from crossing with the Blue Demons leading 3-1 heading into the seventh.
In the final frame, Nigey retired the Red Storm side to clinch the win and snap DePaul's eight-game skid.
Up Next: DePaul will return to Chicago and prepare for its home opener slated for Tuesday, March 28 when 24th-ranked Northwestern makes the trip down to Cacciatore Stadium. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. with coverage carried on FloSoftball.
