Blue Demons return to action this weekend with a home series against Providence
CHICAGO – The offensive firepower of No. 22 Northwestern proved to be too much for DePaul in Tuesday's home opener as the visiting Wildcats took a 20-1 decision at Cacciatore Field.
Northwestern (18-8) started with six runs in the first and didn't look back scoring at least three runs in each inning except for the fifth and final frame.
The Blue Demons couldn't seem to find an answer for All-American pitcher Danielle Williams as the hosts didn't see a batter reach base until the fifth.
DePaul's lone run came after Nicole Sullivan drew a leadoff walk, Grace Frazier reached on a fielder's choice and Carly Alvers singled to center field to load the bases. Baylee Cosgrove drove in the run on an infield single that pushed Sullivan home from third.
Senior right-hander Brenna Smith fell to 2-7 in the circle after just two-thirds inning pitched on four runs, three hits and a walk.
