VILLANOVA, Pa. – DePaul's tribulations continued Sunday afternoon as the Blue Demons dropped a 9-1 five-inning contest to Villanova in the finale of a three-game BIG EAST series. The Wildcats got out to a hot start once again and DePaul could not recover, falling to 12-28 on the season including a 4-14 mark in conference play.
Â
Junior shortsthop Nicole Sullivan proved to be the bright spot for the Blue Demons going 2-for-3 with a pair of base hits. Baylee Cosgrove, Anna Wohlers and Carly Alvers also tallied hits with DePaul's lone run of the day coming on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Cosgrove.
Â
Three pitchers saw time in the circle for the Blue Demons as Abbey Pochie fell to 1-7 with the decision after surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk against five batters faced in the first inning.
Â
Right-hander Bella Nigey was first on in relief, tossing a pair of innings and allowing two runs on two hits while notching a pair of strikeouts. Brenna Smith went two and two-thirds innings and gave way to the game's final three runs to cross. Â
Â
How it Happened
The Blue Demons got off to a strong start, with Sullivan and Cosgrove notching back-to-back base hits to put runners aboard with no outs in the top of the first but neither would be advanced.
Â
The home half of the first saw Villanova break it open on three hits, a Blue Demon error and a pair of walks to take an early 4-0 lead.
Â
A leadoff walk followed by consecutive doubles plated two more for the Wildcats in the third inning as their advantage stretched to six runs.
Â
DePaul plated a run in the fifth after Riley Pool drew a walk and Sullivan sent her second hit of the day down the left field line. Cosgrove reached on a dropped fly ball to center field, allowing pinch runner Ariana Rodriguez to score and runners to move into scoring position. The base runners were left aboard after the inning ended on an infield pop up as the Blue Demons trailed 6-1 after four and a half.
Â
Villanova sealed the series sweep in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run home run to left field followed by a two-out solo shot to right center, walking it off by a score of 9-1.
