Blue Demons fall in final non-conference game of the season
URBANA, Ill. – DePaul fell victim to the long ball on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Illinois 5-0 in the final non-conference contest of the 2023 campaign. The Illini plated all five runs behind three home runs while the Blue Demons left runs on the base paths, stranding eight base runners throughout the game.
Anna Wohlers reached on three occasions, taking a free pass on a HBP twice before tallying a hit in the seventh inning. Junior catcher Riley Pool jumped aboard on a Illinois error and base hit up the middle.
Grace Frazier and Carly Alvers also tallied base hits.
In the circle, Katey Pierce went two and a third innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits. Freshman Abbey Pochie entered in relief and went three and a third, allowing just a pair of hits. Â
How it Happened
Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo home run.
Â
The second inning saw Alvers notch a leadoff base hit, before Frazier laid down a bunt to put a pair on board. Talbot put down a sacrifice to move runners into scoring position, but the Blue Demons couldn't push a run across.
Â
DePaul had another great scoring chance in the third with Wohlers reaching on a hit-by-pitch for the second-consecutive at bat before moving all the way to third on a ground out and wild pitch but would go no further as the DePaul bats would leave runners on the corners.
Â
The Illini would extend their lead to 5-0 behind a pair of home runs in the third inning. Â
Â
In the top of the seventh, Pool and Wohlers each notched base hits, but it wasn't enough as Illinois claimed the victory.
