DePaul advances to BIG EAST Tournament for 17th-consecutive season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – DePaul clinched a berth to the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday afternoon with a 12-4 six-inning victory over Georgetown. The Blue Demons entered the series in need of a sweep and they did just that, coming from behind in each of the three games to advance to the conference tournament for the 17th-consecutive season.
Â
DePaul (17-30, 9-15 BIG EAST) saw production from up and down the lineup, batting a blistering .392 as a squad in the weekend finale.
Â
Carly Alvers and Riley Pool led the way with four RBIs apiece as the pair both went 2-for-3 on the day. Pool batted .500 on the series, totaling two home runs and driving in seven runs.
Â
Senior first baseman Brooke Johnson went 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of base hits and a solo home run while crossing the plate three times. Tori Meyer reached base on three occasions and drove in two runs in the sixth inning. Right fielder Grace Frazier notched an RBI of her own and scored twice on the base paths.
Â
Right-hander Bella Nigey threw five innings in the win, surrendering three runs on six hits. For the series, Nigey owned a 1.75 ERA and threw 10 strikeouts in 12.0 innings of work.
Â
How it Happened
Georgetown jumped in front early, posting a run in the first inning after tallying three hits.
Â
The Blue Demons turned the page and responded in the second inning with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Anna Wohlers led things off with a triple to left center before Meyer put runners on the corners with a free pass. Alvers lifted a sac fly to left field to plate Wohlers while Frazier tallied a base knock to put two runners in scoring position. Pool came to the plate and knocked the runners in with a two-RBI double.
Â
Johnson extended the lead to 4-1 in the third with a solo home run that stayed just inside the left field foul pole.Â
Â
The fourth saw the Blue Demons add on as Frazier drew a walk and moved to second on a passed ball for Pool to bring her all the way around on a two-run homer and push the Blue Demons advantage to 6-1.
Â
The Hoyas saw a two-out walk come around to score on a RBI-single up the middle in the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Â
DePaul continued the scoring streak in the fifth, adding a pair of runs to move in front 8-2. Johnson sent a leadoff base hit to third base and advanced to second on a Meyer single through the left side. Alvers brought both runners around with a two-base single and Frazier drove in a run with a groundout to second.
Â
Georgetown used an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth to trim DePaul's advantage to 8-3.
Â
A four-run sixth inning put the game out of reach as five different Blue Demon batters reached base with Meyer and Alvers knocking in a pair of runs to make the score 12-3.
Â
Down to three outs, the Hoyas sent a solo-home run to left field but it wasn't enough as Nigey induced the final two punchouts to clinch the postseason bid.
