The Blue Demons notch their second victory of the season
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer (2-1-1) defeated EKU 2-1 on Thursday evening. The Colonels generated the first connection, but DePaul responded with an equalizer before the end of the first 45 minutes to tie the game. Tied at the half, both teams battled it out until midfielder Beth Smyth broke through EKU's back line and scored the game winning goal, securing DePaul's victory.Â
Â"EKU really took it to us the first 25 minutes with their energy," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "We started to find our rhythm towards the end of the first half and were fortunate to get a goal back and go into halftime 1-1. We came out the second half a different team and finally found our composure and were able to generate some dangerous chances and eventually find the back of the net."
ÂAfter EKU made an early connection in the 11th minute, DePaul came back fighting to find a response. Ellie Mink found the answer at the 35th minute mark and notched her third goal of the season to tie the game. The two programs entered the second half tied, 1-1.Â
ÂIn the second 45 minutes, DePaul and EKU went head to head looking to take the lead. The two teams went back and forth but no one could seem to find the back of the net. With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, a cross by freshman Lea Eisenring connected to Smyth who broke through and closed the shot. DePaul led the Colonels 2-1. Frantic to answer, the Colonels applied the pressure on DePaul's backline. A last minute EKU goal attempt was saved by goalkeeper Elena Milam, securing DePaul's 2-1 win.Â
ÂUP NEXT: The Blue Demons host Chicagoland rival UIC on Thursday, Sept. 7 for a 4 p.m. CT matchup.Â
