Blue Demons equalize in the 81st minute to draw with Golden Eagles
CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer drew a 2-2 decision to Marquette at Wish Field on Wednesday evening. The Blue Demons outpaced the Golden Eagles in total shots (17) and corner kicks (7) but converted just two of their chances. Noeh Hernandez and Liam Mullins each found the back of the net for DePaul, combining for ten total shots in the tightly contested match.
DePaul (5-6-3, 1-3-2 BIG EAST) earned its fifth point and second draw in league play, moving closer to a potential postseason spot. The Blue Demons controlled much of the first half, outshooting Marquette 12-5 and maintaining 54% possession.
Marquette (6-5-4, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) secured its third draw in the last four outings. Donovan Jones and Grant Locker provided the Golden Eagles' goals in the 8th and 63rd minutes, respectively, to help their team secure the result.
How it Happened
To open the match for the Blue Demons, Liam Mullins attempted two early shots in the 4th and 5th minutes, with one striking the crossbar but ultimately falling short of securing an early goal for DePaul.
Marquette capitalized on an opportunity in the 8th minute with a header from Donovan Jones off a corner kick set-piece from Ryan Amond, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.
Moments later, Noeh Hernandez equalized with a stunning left-footed shot from outside the box, finding the top left corner of the goal. It was his seventh goal of the season, shifting momentum to DePaul midway through the first half.
In the 26th minute, Logan Finnegan attempted his first shot of the match, but it sailed wide to the left of the post.
Hernandez came close to adding a second goal in the 37th minute with a spectacular free kick, but it landed just right of the goal post, handing possession back to Marquette.
Chase Stegall's last-minute shot in the first half also missed wide, resulting in another Marquette goal kick as a competitive, action-packed first half came to a close.
Midway through the 63rd minute, Grant Locker gave Marquette its second lead with a long shot from outside the box, curving into the right side of the goal past Santiago Davila to make it 2-1.
Shortly after, Marquette's Kyle Bebej received a red card for unsporting behavior, leaving the Golden Eagles with 10 men for the final 20 minutes.
In the 70th minute, Finnegan sought a scoring opportunity with a header, but his attempt went over the net.
Mullins had another chance in the 78th minute, but his shot missed wide left.
Finally, in the 81st minute, Mullins completed his comeback effort by scoring on a ball that slipped past the outstretched gloves of Marquette keeper Marten Brink, leveling the match at 2-2.
Both teams battled fiercely, but neither could find the winning edge as DePaul's final home match of the 2024 campaign ended in a draw.
