Softball Tallies First Win of Season

Brooke Johnson and Riley Pool record seven hits and five RBI combined
MEMPHIS, TENN. - DePaul softball split a pair of games Friday at the Blues City Classic, defeating SIUE, 5-4, for its first win of the season and falling to Tennessee Tech, 8-4.
Brooke Johnson recorded four hits, three runs and two RBIs on Friday while Riley Pool added three hits, three RBIs and two walks on the day. Both Pool and Johnson also notched home runs against Tennessee Tech (5-1)
Junior Baylee Cosgrove had a multi-hit game against SIUE, tallying two singles, including one in the seventh that would help DePaul (1-10) take the lead.  Â
Bella Nigey (1-4) got the start against SIUE (4-6), pitching three innings and tallying her first win of the season. The sophomore gave up four runs on five hits throughout the game. Brenna Smith came in for relief, going four innings while recording two strikeouts and only giving up two walks.Â
Lydia Ettema (0-2) earned her first career start against Tennessee Tech going 0.2 innings. Katey Pierce and Nigey came in for relief, with Pierce tossing 3.1 innings. Nigey also picked up three strikeouts against the Golden Eagles.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 - DePaul 5, SIUE 4
The Cougars got on the board early with a solo home run to center field in the first inning. The Blue Demons tied the game, 1-1, in the third as Morgan Rogers scored from second off of a single from Brooke Cwick.
SIUE retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning, plating three runs off of a sacrifice fly and a DePaul error, 4-1.
DePaul got the bats going in the top of the seventh, with Maddy Miklesh pinch hitting and recording her first single of the season. After Rogers reached base, Cwick loaded the bases with a fielder's choice. Talbot recorded an RBI, bringing around Miklesh to score.Â
DePaul's four run inning continued as Johnson knocked her second hit of the game, scoring Rogers from third. A sacrifice fly from Pool tied the game, 4-4, as Cwick scored from third. A single from Cosgrove set up the eventual game-winning single by Carly Alvers.
Game 2 - DePaul 4, Tennessee Tech 8
Tennessee Tech recorded three runs in the bottom of the first off of a walk and a double. DePaul responded in the top of the second with a pair of runners in Pool and Cosgrove. Gracie Jacobs recorded the first RBI as Pool scored, cutting the lead to 3-1. Â
Johnson recorded her fourth home run of the season in the top of the third, making it a one run game, 3-2. The Golden Eagles responded by scoring five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, takingan 8-2 lead. Johnson knocked a single in the top of the sixth inning, while Pool followed with a two-run shot to left to cut the lead in half, 8-4, but DePaul was unable to add any more.
UP NEXT
The Blue Demons are set to take on SIUE and Tennessee Tech on Saturday. First pitches are set for 9 a.m and 11:30 a.m. CT, respectively.
