DePaul Offense Comes Alive Tuesday Against Northern Illinois

Blue Demons record season-high total in hits and runs
DEKALB, ILL. - DePaul softball's offense had a season-best performance on the road Tuesday afternoon, scoring 17 runs in a five-inning 17-5 victory against Northern Illinois. The Blue Demons recorded a season-high number of hits, recording 13, and a season-best number in runs. As a team, DePaul recorded three home runs, including a grand slam by Bibianna Rodriguez in the second inning.Â
Rodriguez tallied a career-high eight RBIs while going 3-for-4 on the day, in addition to a triple and three runs scored. Rodriguez's eight RBIs are the single most of any player in the BIG EAST in a single game this season. The phenomenal batting performances continued as senior catcher Riley Pool went 4-for-4 at the plate, including one home run and three RBIs. Junior third baseman Carly Alvers also had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 in addition to three runs scored and two stolen bases. Additionally, Baylee Cosgrove tallied her first home run of the season.
Sophomore Abbey Pochie got her first start of the season in the circle. Pochie (1-0) threw 3.0 innings with five hits where she allowed four runs. Junior Katey Pierce pitched 2.0 innings of relief where she gave up one run on one hit. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
DePaul (7-20, 2-4 BIG EAST) jumped on the board immediately with Pool's third home run of the season. Northern Illinois (7-19, 1-5 MAC) evened the score in the bottom of the first, 1-1, on a single and a fielder's choice.Â
A stellar second inning propelled DePaul in front for good as the Blue Demons recorded seven runs on five hits. DePaul started the frame with a string of errors and walks. Rodriguez scored off of an error for the go ahead lead, 2-1, before RBI singles by Brooke Johnson and Riley Pool tacked on three more runs for a 5-1 lead. Carly Alvers and Brooke Cwick singled,loading the bases and turning the lineup over. Rodriguez blasted her first career triple, clearing the base paths for an 8-1 lead.Â
The Huskies cut into the lead, 8-4, during the third inning where they scored three runs on three hits.
DePaul slammed the door on any further attempt by the Huskies with a five-run fourth inning, propelled by a grand slam from Rodriguez. Up 13-4 entering the fifth inning, DePaul added four insurance runs on two hits for a 17-4 lead. DePaul notched outs on three of the four batters faced in the bottom of the fifth, clinching its first run-rule victory of the season.

DePaul hosts St. John's this weekend at Cacciatore Stadium, March 28-30. All three games will be available on FloSports while Friday's matchup will stream on Marquee.
