Bella Nigey Strikes Out Seven Against Georgetown

DePaul falls on opening day
CHICAGO - DePaul sophomore pitcher Bella Nigey had a career outing Saturday, totaling seven strikeouts in a 6-3 loss to Georgetown at Cacciatore Stadium that went to extra innings.Â
Nigey earned the start in the circle, going 4.2 innings giving up three runs on five hits. The Bettendorf, Iowa native retired nine-straight batters between the second and fourth innings, four of which came off strikeouts.
Graduate student Brenna Smith (1-4) came in for relief, giving up three runs on three hits while Katey Pierce closed out the game for DePaul (4-16, 0-1 BIG EAST) with 0.2 innings.Â
Sophomore Abbey Pochie recorded her first career hit with a single to left in the eighth inning, while three players notched their first career hits inside of Cacciatore Stadium.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgetown (10-11, 1-0 BIG EAST) got on the board early plating one run off of a double in the first inning, 1-0. Nigey shut down the remaining batters in the frame with two quick strikeouts.
Bibianna Rodriguez had the first hit for DePaul in the second inning, but was left stranded.Â
Georgetown extended their lead, 3-0, after a home run, two singles and a double in the fifth to go up.
Morgan Rodgers got on base with a bunt in the fifth and Addison Talbot followed with a single. Brooke Johnson recorded her first hit of the day, notching a single up the middle to send Rogers home, 3-1. Cwick knocked a two-RBI single to right field, tying the game, 3-3.Â
Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. The Hoyas scored three runs in the top of the eighth off of four hits. The Blue Demons threatened with a runner in the bottom of the eighth, but wasn't able to plate any runs.
UP NEXT
DePaul concludes its home opening weekend with a doubleheader against Georgetown Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. with the second game following approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Both games will be broadcast on FloSoftball and Marquee Sports Network.Â
