Finnegan scores for second time in as many games
EVANSTON, Ill. – DePaul men's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium. The Blue Demons couldn't quite overcome a two-goal deficit despite a late goal from graduate student Logan Finnegan.
In a physical affair between familiar foes, DePaul was provided limited chances with just five shots on the afternoon to Northwestern's 15 although possession remained even.
Senior goalkeeper Santiago Davila made three saves on the afternoon while freshman defender Nolan McGuire also prevented a Wildcats goal on a broken play in the box in the 27th minute.
Scoring opportunities were hard to come by on both sides of the ball as each team earned just one corner kick apiece.
How it Happened
The Blue Demons best chance of the first half came in the 11th minute as Keagan Pace made a run down the right side, drawing the goalie out and sending the ball across the face of the goal forcing the Wildcats center back to make a last-second clearance.
Northwestern (2-0) found their way on to the scoresheet in the 33rd minute, heading home a rebound on a free kick to claim a lead before the break.
The Wildcats held a 9-2 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes of action.
DePaul (1-1) had a quality chance in the 47th minute, earning a free kick on the left side of the box but a shot from Callum Watts sailed just wide.
The 57th minute saw Northwestern widen their lead to 2-0 on a ball played through the middle of the box and lifted right over a diving Santiago Davila.
Liam Mullins got his head on a ball serviced in off a free kick from Noeh Hernandez in the 81st minute, but it sailed just wide.
Playing with 10 men on the field for the last six minutes of the match, DePaul pressed and was awarded a free kick that saw Jordan Clagette switch fields to the feet of Grant Kelner who left the ball for Finnegan in the box who then fired it near post between the pipe and the goalkeeper to put the Blue Demons on the board.
