Blue Demons fall on Alumni Day
CHICAGO, Ill. –DePaul men's soccer team demonstrated grit and composure against one of the nation's best in Saturday's 3-0 defeat to No. 18 Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field.
Â
The Blue Demons (2–6–6, 0–4–1 BIG EAST) went toe-to-toe with the BIG EAST unbeaten Hoyas, matching the visitors in possession (53%–47%) and keeping the game within reach for much of the contest.
Â
The Hoyas outshot DePaul 13–6, for only the third match this season an opponent has held an edge in the category. The Blue Demons earned five corner kicks to Georgetown's seven.
Noeh Hernandez had two of DePaul's six shots including DePaul's best chance of the match
Â
How It Happened
Georgetown opened the scoring in the 27th minute when forward Mitchell Baker capitalized on a loose ball in the box to put the visitors ahead 1–0. DePaul responded with its strongest attacking stretch of the half, generating multiple looks from Noeh Hernandez and Daniel Hickiewicz, including a dangerous strike in the 39th minute that forced a save from Georgetown goalkeeper Charlie DeMarco.
Â
Just before halftime, the Hoyas extended their lead as Matthew Van Horn converted from close range off an assist from Zach Zengue, sending Georgetown into the break up 2–0.
Â
DePaul came out with renewed energy in the second half, maintaining strong possession and creating pressure through set pieces. The Blue Demons earned several corner kicks early in the half and nearly found the net when Joon Han fired a shot just over the crossbar in the 72nd minute.
Â
Georgetown added its third goal in the 65th minute through Mateo Ponce Ocampo, assisted by Baker, to secure the result. Despite the scoreline, the DePaul defense, led by Ethan Gordon, Gavin Netzel, Nolan McGuire, and Christian Baumgartner, remained organized and limited Georgetown's chances down the stretch
