Second-Half Surge Lifts Marquette Past DePaul

Quickfire goals prove difference in road setback
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Despite matching Marquette through much of the opening half and generating quality looks of their own, DePaul women's soccer was undone by a flurry of second-half goals, falling 4-1 to the Golden Eagles on Saturday night at Valley Fields.
After holding Marquette scoreless for the first 45 minutes, the Blue Demons (3-8-1, 0-3-1 BIG EAST) conceded twice within the opening three minutes of the second half before a penalty kick and late breakaway capped the home side's scoring. DePaul continued to press until the final whistle, breaking through in the 85th minute as a Marquette (6-3-3, 2-0-2 BIG EAST) own goal put the Scarlet and Blue on the board.
How it Happened
Both sides settled in early, with Marquette recording two shots in the opening ten minutes but only one on target. The Blue Demons absorbed the early pressure and began to find rhythm in transition through the midfield.
In the 21st minute, the Golden Eagles narrowly missed a close-range opportunity, sending a shot wide of the far post. DePaul responded minutes later with a dangerous counterattack as Sienna Gonzales nearly capitalized on a feed inside the box before her attempt was blocked just feet from goal. Jericho Frigon provided DePaul's best look of the half in the 44th minute, sending a right-footed strike inches wide of the post as the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Marquette opened the second half quickly, with Coco Dorfman scoring in the 46th minute off a cross from Megan Murray and Molly Keiper, then striking again two minutes later after collecting a deflection in front of goal. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 in the 76th minute when Jocelyn Leigh converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box, before adding a fourth in the 81st on a breakaway finish from Emily Fix.
DePaul continued to battle until the final whistle and found an 85th-minute goal after a Marquette clearance attempt deflected off a defender and into the net for an own goal, marking the Blue Demons' lone tally of the evening.
