DePaul Splits Saturday at UNCW

Blue Demons match season-high with eight runs against Rider
Wilmington, N.C. – DePaul softball (6-6) earned a five-inning victory over Rider, 8-0, in the morning, before falling to UNCW 6-1 in the afternoon.
Junior Bella Nigey (2-1) excelled in the circle, giving up just two hits in four scoreless innings against the Broncs. Senior Katey Pierce entered in relief for the final three outs, including two strikeouts.
Outfielder Kali Blount went four-for-six at the plate over both games, including a two-RBI double. Catcher Zoe Levine also added two doubles of her own, bringing her season total to five. Lydia Ettema earned her first multi-hit game of the season, and the squad's 11 hits against Rider mark the second game the Blue Demons have registered double-figure hits this year.
Kelly Greene got the nod for game two, allowing five runs and two hits. Ava Gusel appeared in relief for the fourth, allowing just two hits, and Hannah Messer entered for the final two innings, giving up one run on a pair of hits.
Chelsea Parker added her third hit in as many career at-bats versus the Seahawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One – DePaul 8, Rider 0 (Five innings)
The Blue Demons rapidly got on the board, earning five runs, all of which came with two outs. After senior Carly Alvers walked, Ettema sent a triple to center field to bring her home. Kelly Beaupre was hit by a pitch, and Levine doubled to bring both her and Ettema across the plate to score. Addison Talbot sent a single up the middle to score Levine, and Bibi Rodriguez concluded the onslaught with an RBI-double of her own.
The second inning commenced with consecutive singles from Blount and Ettema, and a Broncs error loaded the bases for Talbot, but DePaul could not capitalize, leaving three runners on base.The Blue Demons would later tack on two more in the top of the third frame, after singles from Rodriguez and Morgan Rogers, and a two-RBI double from Blount. Levine's fifth double of the year in the top of the fourth pushed Alexis Houge into scoring position, and a groundout from Talbot secured the final run for DePaul.
Pierce entered in relief to secure the final three outs for the Blue Demons, notching two strikeouts, and closing the 8-0 shutout victory.
Game Two – DePaul 1, UNCW 6
The Seahawks would open the scoring in the bottom of the first, with one earned and one unearned run. They would tack on three more runs in the third, a result of two additional Blue Demon errors and a pair of stolen bases. Their final run came after a triple from Madison Biddle, with a single from Maggie Pertee bringing her across the plate.
UP NEXT
DePaul will travel to the Sunshine State for one last weekend of non-conference play Feb.28-Mar.2. They will tackle Mount St. Mary's three times, and host Jacksonville twice.
