Nigey throws five scoreless innings in defeat
VILLANOVA, Pa. – DePaul softball (13-22, 1-12 BIG EAST) fell to Villanova (20-17-1, 9-4 BIG EAST) 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Bella Nigey kicked off the weekend for the Blue Demons, her 13th start of 2025, and second consecutive series-opening start. Nigey went five innings in the circle, her longest outing since hurling six frames against Valparaiso on March 26. She allowed one run on six hits and notched one strikeout. Kelly Greene entered for the final frame, giving up one run on two hits.
Alexis Houge and Bibianna Rodriguez each tallied hits for the Blue Demons, just Houge's third this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the Wildcats loading the bases in the first frame, Nigey retired the final two batters of the inning to hold Villanova scoreless.
The Blue Demons had a strong showing defensively, with Wildcat Ava Franz caught stealing in the third, a kneeling throw from Carly Alvers in the fourth to record a pivotal second out, and a pair of catches from Chelsea Parker at the wall in right field during the fifth.
No runs were scored until the sixth, after a double from Maranda Runco and RBI single from Franz earned the first run for the Wildcats. A pair of walks, an infield fly, and another RBI single from Maddie Burrows gave Villanova a two-run advantage heading into the final inning. DePaul was unable to mount a comeback, and Villanova took the 2-0 win.
