Carly Alvers hits her first home run of the season
CHICAGO – DePaul softball (14-26, 1-16 BIG EAST) fell to UConn (27-14, 13-4 BIG EAST) in a pair of games Friday afternoon. The Blue Demons dropped game one by a score of 16-1 in five innings and fell 14-5 in game two.
Sophomore Lydia Ettema tallied four hits on the day, including her fifth home run of the season in game one, along with three hits in game two. She is just the fourth Blue Demon to tally three or more hits in a single game this year. Carly Alvers logged the only other hit of the opening contest, along with her first home run of the year in game two.
Baylee Cosgrove contributed two hits in the second game, good for her eighth multi-hit outing of 2025, as did Zoe Levine, her sixth game with two or more hits.
The ten total hits by DePaul in game two represent its single-game high in BIG EAST play.
Freshman Ava Gusel earned the start for DePaul in the first matchup, her fifth of the season, and first appearance since April 5. She conceded four walks before exiting in favor of fellow freshman Hannah Messer. Messer went 2.2 innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits. Ettema then made her third appearance at the plate this year, recording two outs and giving up a pair of runs. Gusel reentered for the final 1.2 innings, falling to 0-4 as the pitcher of record.
Bella Nigey got the nod for game two of the doubleheader, going 3.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. Kelly Greene entered in relief, yielding six runs on three hits. Senior Katey Pierce finished the day, allowing two runs on two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: DePaul 1, UConn 16 (Five innings)
UConn worked four consecutive walks to open the game, bringing one run across, and a two-RBI single from Kaitlyn Breslin then gave the Huskies a three-run advantage. They tacked on another pair in the second frame with a two-RBI double from Rosie Garcia.
DePaul got one back with a solo home run from Lydia Ettema, concluding the scoring for the Blue Demons.
UConn exploded for seven runs in the third and added two more in both the fourth and fifth frames, taking a 16-1 victory in game one.
Game Two: DePaul 5, UConn 14
DePaul was first into scoring position after a leadoff double from Cosgrove, but neither side plated a run until a three-RBI home run from Cat Petteys gave the Huskies an early lead.
A double from Garcia and single from Petteys brought around three more runs for UConn, but DePaul would not go away quietly, notching two runs after a solo home run from Alvers and RBI-double from Levine to score Addison Talbot.
The Huskies added two more in the top of the sixth, and six in the top of the seventh, but the Blue Demons continue to battle, plating three runs in the final frame, including Messer's third double of the season. The comeback would not be enough, and UConn took the 14-5 win in game two of the series.
