Baylee Cosgrove logs three hits in defeat
Baylee Cosgrove went a perfect three for three at the plate, including two doubles, and Carly Alvers added her fourth multi-hit game, registering two on the day. Junior Alexis Houge earned her first multi-hit outing of 2025 and the third of her career, adding a pair in the narrow defeat.
Eight runs for the Blue Demons represents their highest total in BIG EAST play this season.
Bella Nigey went 4.2 innings as the starting pitcher, allowing four runs on five hits, and then reentered for the final frame after Ava Gusel, Hannah Messer and Kelly Greene made relief appearances, conceding two additional runs on two hits in the eighth frame. Nigey falls to 7-9 as the pitcher of record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Nigey quickly retired the first three batters she faced, and a leadoff single from Cosgrove jump-started the DePaul offense. Morgan Rogers laid down a bunt, reaching after a UConn error. Kelly Beaupre proceeded to put the ball in play and the throw to home was not delivered in time, allowing Cosgrove to score.
A double from Alvers scored Beaupre and Rogers, and Bibianna Rodriguez concluded the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Rogers, leaving the Blue Demons ahead by four runs.
Nigey once again retired the side in order, and DePaul added one additional run with a sacrifice fly from Rogers, who returned to the lineup for the first time since April 5.
UConn first struck in the fourth inning, upon a single from Cat Petteys, RBI double from Kaitlyn Breslin, and a sacrifice fly from Hope Jenkins. The Huskies added another pair in the fifth, but Cosgrove snatched a line drive from Hope Jenkins out of the air for the final out.
Lydia Ettema's second home run of the weekend and an RBI double from Brooke Cwick once again extended the lead to three runs for DePaul. The Huskies responded with a three-RBI home run from Grace Jenkins, knotting the battle at seven runs apiece.
Hits from Cosgrove and Houge started the bottom of the sixth, and pinch hitter Addi Burdick put the ball in play for Houge to score, but the Huskies added a run in the seventh frame to force extra innings.
A home run from Petteys, another double from Breslin, and a fielder's choice gave the Huskies a two-run advantage. Despite Beaupre reaching base the Blue Demons would not score again, with UConn taking the 10-8 victory in eight innings.
