DePaul Softball Splits Doubleheader with Georgetown

Series finale set for 12 p.m. Sunday
CHICAGO – DePaul softball earned a doubleheader split versus Georgetown Friday afternoon in day one of the series at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons picked up a 5-2 victory in the opener before the Hoyas' offense took over for a 20-5 win in game two.
Senior infielder Lexi Houge led the charge for the Blue Demons, batting .429 on the day with three hits and two runs scored, while Jolie Adams hit .400 across the two games with a pair of RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Parker totaled two doubles, drove in a run and crossed the plate twice on Friday.
Sophomore shortstop Maya Wondaal went .500 at the plate and registered a two-out, three-RBI triple in game two.
DePaul turned three double plays on the day but struggled to find consistency defensively with six errors across the two games.
Sophomore Hannah Messer got the start in game one, tossing a complete game and allowing just two runs on seven hits to improve to 5-7 on the season. Five different pitchers saw time in the circle in game two, with starting right-hander Kelly Greene tagged with the loss to fall to 2-4 this season.
How It Happened
Game 1 – DePaul 5, Georgetown 2
DePaul got the bats going early with a leadoff single from Houge, who advanced on a passed ball to move into scoring position. Parker reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and Lydia Ettema delivered an RBI base hit to give DePaul an early 1–0 lead in the first inning.
Messer led off the bottom of the second with a base hit. Houge followed with her second hit of the day, but both runners were left stranded to end the frame.
Parker opened the third inning with a leadoff double, but a double play cleared the bases and kept the inning scoreless.
Georgetown responded in the fourth inning with its first hit of the game and brought the runner around to score, evening the game at 1–1.
Kali Blount got the Blue Demons on the basepaths in the bottom of the fourth with a walk. A sacrifice bunt from Messer moved Blount to third, and a passed ball brought her home to give DePaul a 2–1 edge.
Houge notched her third hit of the game to lead off the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Rogers. Parker drew a walk, and a hit by pitch to Ettema loaded the bases. Adams provided insurance with a two-RBI double, scoring Houge and Parker to make it 4-1. In the next at bat, Blount plated Ettema with a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing DePaul's advantage to 5-1 after five innings.
The Hoyas threatened in the seventh with a pair of hits and a run, but the Blue Demons secured the final outs to claim their second-straight BIG EAST victory.
Game 2 – Georgetown 20, DePaul 5
Georgetown (7-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) used a four-hit, four-run first inning to jump ahead early and force a change in the circle for the Blue Demons, with Bella Nigey entering in relief.
In the bottom of the first, Rogers sent a one-out double to the wall but was left stranded just 60 feet from the plate.
The Hoyas added another run in the top of the third with a solo home run to right-center before Emersyn Coulter ended the inning on a double play, securing the flyout and throwing home where catcher Zoe Levine applied the tag to keep it a five-run deficit after 2.5 innings.
DePaul (11-15, 2-3 BIG EAST) got on the board in the fourth as Coulter's leadoff single came around to score behind two stolen bases and an RBI single from Levine, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
Georgetown added two runs in the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of hits and a DePaul error to extend its lead to 8-1.
The Blue Demons answered in the bottom half as Rogers singled to right field and came around to score in the next at bat on Parker's double to right-center. A Hoyas error coupled with a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Wondaal, who delivered a bases-clearing triple to the fence to trim the deficit to 8-5 after five innings.
The Hoyas sealed the victory with 12 combined runs across the sixth and seventh innings to secure the doubleheader split with a 20-5 win in game two.
