Blue Demons drop non-conference finale
Chelsea Parker, Kali Blount and Brooke Cwick each drove in two runs to pace the Blue Demons offensively. Jolie Adams recorded her 10th multi-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Blount added her third multi-hit performance of the year with a 2-for-3 outing that included a two-run home run.
DePaul utilized five pitchers in the contest. Sophomore right-hander Gwen Baker turned in a season-high 3.2 innings in her 18th appearance, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out two. Hannah Messer followed with 1.1 hitless innings in relief, retiring five batters. Bella Nigey entered in the sixth, allowing four runs while recording one out before Kelly Greene faced four batters and surrendered two runs. Ava Gusel tossed 0.2 innings before Baker re-entered in the seventh.
How It Happened
A two-out RBI single gave Notre Dame an early 1-0 lead with runners on the corners, but Baker limited the damage with her first strikeout of the game.
DePaul answered with a six-run third inning. Katie Borges led off with an infield single before Zoe Levine doubled to center to put two in scoring position. Pinch hitter Addy Poe reached on a fielder's choice to score Borges and tie the game. Adams followed with a base hit to set the table for Parker, who lined a single up the middle to plate two and give DePaul a 3-1 lead. Lydia Ettema reached on a fielder's choice, and an Irish error allowed Adams to score. Cwick capped the inning with a 14-pitch at-bat, dropping a single into shallow right to clear the bases and extend the lead to 6-1.
Baker retired four straight across the third and fourth innings before back-to-back Notre Dame baserunners prompted a pitching change, bringing Messer into the circle.
The Blue Demons added on in the fifth when Adams singled and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Blount followed with a two-run homer to center, pushing the lead to 8-1.
Notre Dame responded with a six-run sixth inning on six hits, aided by a pair of DePaul miscues, to cut the deficit to 8-7.
DePaul threatened in the seventh as Adams and Blount recorded singles to open the inning, but both were left stranded. The Fighting Irish completed the comeback in the bottom half, scoring two runs on three hits and a walk to secure the 9-8 decision.
