Big second half for Irish too much to overcome for DePaul
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame took a 10-point lead with an early second-half run and didn't slow down as DePaul dropped a 95-70 decision at Purcell Pavilion on Saturday. The Blue Demons trailed by three at halftime, but the Irish outscored DePaul by a 56-34 margin in the second half.
Jalen Coleman-Lands knocked down a pair of three-pointers as DePaul (3-1) took a 13-7 lead early in the game. The Blue Demons held the advantage over the first 12 minutes of the game, but couldn't get away from the Irish. A three-pointer by T. J. Gibbs tied the game at 24-24 and Notre Dame took its first lead with 7:23 left on a bucket by John Mooney.
Notre Dame (4-1) led by as many as six in the first half before Devin Gage pulled DePaul with to within three at halftime with the score at 39-36.
The second half opened with two three-pointers and a jumper by Notre Dame around an Eli Cain free throw and the Irish took their first double-digit advantage less than two minutes into the second half.
Notre Dame led by as many as 29 points late in the contest and settled on a final score of 95-70.
Max Strus led DePaul with 15 points and five rebounds while Coleman-Lands finished with 12 points and rebounds. Cain totaled 11 points, four rebounds and four assists and Jaylen Butz scored 10 points with four rebounds.
Rex Pflueger led Notre Dame with 20 points and Gibbs added 18 points.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game against Cleveland State. The game can be seen on FS2 and heard on WYLL (1160 AM).
