Blue Demons Host Marian in Exhibition Game Tuesday at Wintrust Arena

DePaul faces alum Drake Diener and his Marian squad in preseason game
CHICAGO – DePaul and Marian meet in the lone exhibition game of the preseason for the Blue Demons. Marian is located in Fond du Lac, Wis., and is a NCAA Division III program. Former Blue Demon Drake Diener is in his second season as head coach of the Sabres. Start time is 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday following the DePaul women's exhibition game.
Marian went 7-18 overall and 5-15 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The NACC also features Illinois schools in Illinois Tech, Benedictine, Aurora, Dominican, Rockford and Concordia Chicago.
Diener played at DePaul from 2001-05 and finished his career as the programs all-time leader in free throw percentage, three-point field goals and three-point field goal attempts. His three-point field goals (216 3FG) and free throw percentage (.873 - 192-220) records still stand and he's currently 33rd all-time with 1,208 career points.
What's Back: Entering the 2019-20 season, DePaul returns nine players including two starters from a year ago. Headlining the returners are Jaylen Butz, Jalen Coleman-Lands, Devin Gage and Paul Reed. Reed was the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player last season after averaging 12.3 points per game and leading the league with 8.5 rebounds per game.
Coleman-Lands played nine games in 2018-19 before a season-ending hand injury. He averaged 9.6 points per game while Devin Gage averaged 9.1 points per game with a team-high 130 assists last season. Butz chipped in 6.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game with 13 starts.
Overall, the Blue Demons return just over 42 percent of the scoring and nearly 54 percent of the rebounding from last season.
What's New: A total of eight newcomers are on the 2019-20 DePaul roster including two transfers, a sophomore and five freshmen. The freshmen class includes Markese Jacobs, Oscar Lopez, Sullivan Menard, Nick Ongenda and Romeo Weems while the transfers are Darious Hall and Charlie Moore. Hall sat out last season after transferring from Arkansas while Moore returned to Chicago in April after playing last season at Kansas. Moore received a waiver for immediate eligibility on Oct. 4. Sophomore Brendan Favre joined the program at the start of Fall quarter. Favre was a team manager in 2018-19.
Reed Named Second Team Preseason All-BIG EAST: Junior Paul Reed was picked by the league's head coaches as the league unveiled its preseason selections at media day. Reed was the 2019 Most Improved Player in the league after nearly averaging a double-double in conference play last season. He averaged 13.3 points and 9.0 rebounds in 18 BIG EAST games a year ago and returns as the league's top rebounder after averaging 8.5 boards per game overall in 2018-19.
Walking in St. Vincent's Footsteps: DePaul traveled to France and Italy in August on a foreign tour. The trip was unique with the first half of the time overseas dedicated to walking in the footsteps of St. Vincent de Paul and learning about the foundation of DePaul University.
The team left Chicago on Aug. 3 and arrived in Paris on Aug. 4. Following four days in Paris, the team traveled to the Normandy region before returning to Paris and flying to Rome on Aug. 11. The Blue Demons played three games during the trip with wins in all three contests. DePaul defeated the Netherlands National "B" Team in the first and third games by scores of 73-64 and 79-67. In the second game of the trip, the Blue Demons defeated the AK Paris All-Stars by a score of 118-58.
Moore Granted Immediate Eligibility: Junior guard Charlie Moore was been granted an NCAA waiver to be immediately eligible for competition on Oct. 4. The Chicago native returned home after attending Kansas from 2017-19.
Moore led the Blue Demons this summer on a 3-0 trip to France and Italy where he averaged 20.7 points per game while shooting .563 (9-16) from three-point range and .846 (11-13) from the free throw line. He also posted team highs of 13 assists and eight steals as the Blue Demons averaged 90.0 points per game in the three European contests.
After earning Mr. Basketball honors at Chicago's Morgan Park, Moore played his freshman season at California. With the Bears, he picked up Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention honors after leading the team with 120 assists and averaging 12.2 points per game.
Moore transferred to Kansas and sat out the 2017-18 season under NCAA transfer guidelines. In 2018-19, he played in 35 games for the Jayhawks with averages of 2.9 points and 1.3 assists in 13.1 minutes per game.
Cameron and New Zealand Finish 13th at FIBA U19s: DePaul sophomore Flynn Cameron competed with his native New Zealand at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Greece. New Zealand finished 13th in the world as Cameron led the Junior Tall Blacks in scoring in the final two games that saw wins over Senegal and the Philippines.
Cameron averaged 11.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game in seven games. Following a 2-1 record in the group stage, New Zealand opened bracket play with a 77-62 loss in the round of 16 to eventual runner-up Mali before dropping an 84-79 decision to Argentina in the Class 9-16 round.
New Zealand bounced back and won its final two games as Cameron led the team in scoring in both contests. He scored 19 points with seven steals, five assists and five rebound in an 87-71 win over Senegal and led New Zealand in the final game with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 76-70 victory against the Philippines.
The Junior Tall Blacks finished the World Cup with a 4-3 record while Cameron was ranked among individual leaders in scoring (11.3 ppg - t34th), rebounding ( 6.1 rpg - t28th), assists (4.4 apg - t11th) and steals (2.0 spg - t13th) per game.
Challenging Schedule Awaits: DePaul's 2019-20 non-conference schedule features opponents from the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. A total of three Big Ten opponents are scheduled with games at Iowa (Gavitt Tipoff Games) and Minnesota along with a home game against Northwestern.
The Blue Demons face NCAA runner-up Texas Tech at Wintrust Arena on Dec. 4 with additional home games against Central Michigan and Buffalo from the Mid-American Conference and local foe UIC from the Horizon League.
DePaul's conference schedule opens with home games against Seton Hall (Dec. 30) and Providence (Jan. 4) before a two-game trip to St. John's (Jan. 11) and Villanova (Jan. 14).
A three-game homestand in mid-January features Butler (Jan. 18), Creighton (Jan. 22) and St. John's (Jan. 25). The first month of 2020 concludes with DePaul making the return trip to Seton Hall (Jan. 29).
February opens with a trip to Milwaukee to face Marquette (Feb. 1) followed by a home game against Xavier (Feb. 4) to start the second half of the conference schedule.
