Blue Demons led from the first bucket and by as many as 21 points in second half
CHICAGO - Paul Reed led three Blue Demons in double figures with 23 points and nine rebounds as DePaul led the entire afternoon in a 79-66 win over No. 5/5 Butler. The win gave the Blue Demons their first victory over a top five opponent since December 2006.
Rounding out the Blue Demons in double figures was Jalen Coleman-Lands with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the free throw line while Romeo Weems chipped in with 11 points. Charlie Moore led all players with eight assists along with nine points and six rebounds.
As a team, the Blue Demons shot .489 (22-45) from the field including a season-high .588 (10-17) from three-point range.
Reed scored the first four points of the afternoon for the Blue Demons as a short corner jump shot from the junior big man gave DePaul a 4-2 advantage less than three minutes into the action. With 16:08 on the clock, a push shot from Reed made it 8-2, prompting a Bulldog timeout.
Reed had it going from the opening tip and with 13:24 to play, a three-pointer gave the Orlando native 11 points as DePaul opened a 15-6 lead. With 11:13 to play, Jaylen Butz tipped in an offensive rebound through contact, before making his free throw, as the DePaul advantage grew to 20-6.
DePaul would open up the lead to 16, but Butler responded, pulling within 10 points at 23-13 with just over nine minutes to play. However, the Blue Demons quickly re-established control of the game as Weems and Reed knocked down back-to-back threes, pushing the host's advantage back up to 16 at 29-13.
In an action-filled end to the first half, Devin Gage and Weems knocked down back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute to send DePaul (13-5, 1-4 BIG EAST) to the half leading by a score of 44-34.
With just over 12 minutes left in the game, a Moore layup in transition pushed the DePaul lead back to 14 and a few minutes later, Moore stepped into a three-point shot and knocked it down to bring the Blue Demon lead up to 16 at 60-44.
With 9:28 left in the game, Butz posterized a Butler defender that sent the largest crowd of the season at Wintrust Arena into a frenzy. Then, with the arena still buzzing, Coleman-Lands knocked down a three-pointer to push the Blue Demon lead to 19 at 65-46.
Another Coleman-Lands three gave DePaul its largest lead of the game at 70-49 with just over seven minutes left in the game.
Down the stretch Butler would not get closer than 11 points as the Blue Demons finished off the 79-66 final.
Butler (15-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) was led by 16 points from Kamar Baldwin while Jordan Tucker finished with 13 points.
