Blue Demons cannot withstand sixth inning rally from the Braves
PEORIA, Ill. – After holding Bradley scoreless through five innings, DePaul could not withstand a late rally from the Braves, falling 2-1 in game two of a doubleheader Monday afternoon.
DePaul (7-7) allowed just two Bradley (3-6) hits in the first five innings before the Braves mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning to score two runs off of a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.
The top of the second inning saw two Blue Demons draw walks to create a scoring opportunity with Gabby O'Riley and Brooke Johnson advancing to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Jessica Cothern could not connect on the ensuing at bat and the runners were left stranded.
Johnson knocked in an RBI single to right field to score Angela Scalzitti and put the Blue Demons on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
In the fifth inning, Cothern reached base on a base hit up the middle before Zoie Rettig pinch ran and was caught stealing by the Braves catcher. Angela Scalzitti singled to left field and was advanced on a Gutierrez walk. The Blue Demons left two stranded.
In the sixth inning, Bradley knocked in a leadoff single to left field followed by an RBI double to left center to tie the game at one apiece. Bradley went on to score the go-ahead run on a sac fly to center field with the runner at third base tagging and scoring.
Tori Meyer made her first start of the season in the circle and was credited with the setback.
DePaul will return home and prepare for the opening weekend of BIG EAST play, March 13-14. The Blue Demons will make the trip to Queens, N.Y. to face St. John's for a doubleheader on Saturday and single game on Sunday.
