Blue Demons pick up a pair of one-run wins behind Tori Meyer's big day
ROSEMONT, Ill. – There was no rest for the weary on day two of the DePaul Dome Tournament as the Blue Demons walked away with a pair of one-run victories over Bowling Green and Saint Louis to improve to 3-0 on the 2023 season. With the second win on the day, head coach Tracie Adix-Zins earned her 100th career win leading her alma mater.
Â
In Friday's opener, DePaul took down Bowling Green in a low-scoring 2-1 affair before using a four-run seventh inning to overcome a 7-4 deficit and take down Saint Louis 8-7.Â
Â
Senior outfielder Tori Meyer had a monster day, going a combined 4-for-6, including an inside the park home run against the Falcons in game one and a 3-for-3 game two including the two-RBI walk-off single to clinch the comeback victory over Saint Louis.
Â
First baseman Brooke Johnson totaled a two-hit day while providing what proved to be the go-ahead run against Bowling Green with a two-base RBI-single.
Â
In the thrilling victory over Saint Louis, a multitude of Blue Demons stepped up in crunch time including a 2-for-4 outing from Anna Wohlers who notched a two-RBI double in the third and later a one-out triple in the top of the seventh. Grace Frazier provided a huge lift with a two-run double in the final inning while scoring the game-tying run off Meyer's bat.
Â
DePaul utilized all four arms on the pitching staff across the two contests, with Abbey Pochie receiving the start against Bowling Green. The Chicago native went five and a third while surrendering a lone earned run and four hits before Purdue transfer Brenna Smith made her Blue Demon debut in relief. Smith threw 1.2 innings of work and saw no traffic on the base paths while striking out a pair to earn the save.
Â
Junior-college transfer Katey Pierce earned the start against the Billikens, going four innings and allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits. Freshman Bella Nigey provided relief in the fifth, striking out a trio of batters and allowing three runs while holding on for the win to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

How It Happened
Game 1: DePaul 2, Bowling Green 1
The bats were quiet on both sides as neither team saw a hit until the third inning. The Blue Demons did their damage in the fourth inning, with Meyer recording a leadoff inside the park home run with a hard-hit ball that ricocheted off the center field wall. In the next at bat, Baylee Cosgrove drew a walk and was driven in on a Johnson RBI-single to provide the eventual go-ahead run.
Â
Bowling Green got on the board in the top of the sixth after a leadoff infield-single advanced on a sacrifice bunt and was etched across on a single to center field. DePaul's Smith entered in relief and trimmed down the final five Falcon batters to claim the victory for the Blue Demons
Â
Game 2: DePaul 8, Saint Louis 7
Dissimilar from the day's first game, the teams crossed the plate early and often. Each team etched a run in the first inning with the Meyer crossing the plate on a Cosgrove sac fly.
Â
In the third, Meyer and Johnson drew walks and moved in to scoring position on a Nicole Sullivan fielder's choice before Wohlers reeled them home with a double to put DePaul in front 3-1.
Â
Saint Louis scored five-unanswered runs including a three-run fourth before the Blue Demons roared back with five-combined runs in the sixth and seventh. After the Billikens jumped in front 6-3 after 5.5, DePaul earned a run back in the bottom of the sixth on an Alexis Houge fielder's choice which brought Frazier, who drew a one-out walk, across the dish and cut the deficit to just two.
Â
The seventh saw the Billikens stretch their lead back to three, 7-4, on four hits and a DePaul fielding error but the Blue Demons would swiftly respond. After a leadoff fly out, Wohlers tripled to right field, Riley Pool drew a walk and Frazier scored them both with a double to center field and bring the hosts within one, 7-6. Carly Alvers took a walk, freshman Maddy Miklesh reached on an infield error and loaded the bases for Meyer to unleash a base hit to left field and lift DePaul to a win.
