Addison Talbot hits first career home run in the setback
NORMAL, ILL. – A 10-run sixth inning for Illinois State stung the Blue Demons on Tuesday afternoon at Marian Kneer Stadium as the visitors saw a three-run lead dissipate in the 41st all-time meeting between in-state foes.
DePaul (8-14), led by right-hander Brenna Smith in the circle, held the Redbirds to just two hits through five innings while stringing together quality at bats and building a 3-0 advantage, but ISU's late rally proved to be too much.
Six different Blue Demons recorded a hit while Addison Talbot, Brooke Johnson and Tori Meyer each tallied an RBI.
DePaul hung a run on the board early thanks to a Talbot solo home run in the top of the first inning. The shot sailed over the left field wall to put the Blue Demons in front 1-0 and mark the first homer of Talbot's career.
The third inning saw the Blue Demons double their lead after Grace Frazier drew a one-out walk and came around on a Johnson hard hit ball up the middle to give DePaul a 2-0 advantage.
The Blue Demons added a run in the sixth inning after Nicole Sullivan sent a one-out double to center and was driven home by Meyer on a ball through the left side.
Illinois State (11-15) mounted their 10-run sixth inning behind five hits, three walks and a pair of DePaul errors to take the lead for good.
In the circle, Smith went five and two-thirds innings surrendering three runs on four hits while registering five strikeouts. Freshman Abbey Pochie allowed five runs on five hits and a pair of walks in relief.
