Blue Demons post season-best 18 hits in five-inning win
Â
Eight Blue Demon batters tallied two or more RBIs as DePaul (10-17, 2-5 BIG EAST) boasted a team average of .643 (18-for-28) on the outing.
Â
Shortstop Nicole Sullivan went 3-for-4 including her fourth home run of the season while driving in four runs. At the leadoff spot, Anna Wohlers went two-four-three and crossed the plate three times in addition to picking up her 25th RBI of the season. Brooke Johnson pushed across three runs on a pair of hits to go along with a drawn walk and a pair of runs.
Â
Riley Pool and Addison Talbot pushed a pair of runs across while Tori Meyer, Grace Frazier and Baylee Cosgrove recorded one RBI apiece. Carly Alvers put together a two-for-three afternoon at the dish while making a couple key defensive plays at third base.
Â
Right-hander Brenna Smith picked up the win in relief, going three and two-thirds and retiring 10 of the 15 Friar batters that she faced. The Riverside, Calif. native surrendered four hits and one earned run while notching three strikeouts. Bella Nigey threw an inning and a third, allowing five runs on four hits.
Â
How it Happened
Providence (9-19, 2-8) scored in the top of the first inning with an RBI-single to left before Sullivan matched that in the bottom half of the frame with a base-hit up the middle to bring Wohlers around from second.
Â
The Friars posted four runs on four hits in the second to reclaim the lead but the Blue Demons answered with three-consecutive base knocks to set the table for Cosgrove to lift a sacrifice fly to left field and Johnson an infield single to plate a pair and cut the deficit to two.
Â
It was an uneventful third for both squads as Smith retired eight-straight Providence batters before the Blue Demons unleashed 12 runs on 10 hits in the fourth in 16 at bats.
Â
The top of the fifth saw the visitors string together a trio of hits and push a run across before a sensational throw from Frazier in right field caught a Friars runner rounding third to put the exclamation point on the victory.
Up Next: The Blue Demons and Friars will face off in game two of the three-game slate on Saturday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. Live coverage can be found on FloSoftball.
