Blue Demons win game two of doubleheader to claim first BIG EAST series of the season
A trio of DePaul batters tallied multi-RBI games in game two led by Brooke Johnson and Baylee Cosgrove who notched three apiece with Anna Wohlers knocking in a pair. Nicole Sullivan drove in an insurance run on her fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning.
Four Blue Demons boasted an average of .400 or better on the day with Carly Alvers going two-for-five (.400), Cosgrove (.500) driving in four runs, Johnson (.571) collecting nine bases and Wohlers (.600) reaching base at a .750 clip.
Katey Pierce picked up her second win of the season in the circle in four innings of work, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Right-hander Brenna Smith earned the save after hurling three innings, surrendering a pair of runs on a pair of hits.
How it Happened
Game 1 – Providence 12, DePaul 1 (Five Innings)
Providence scored in every inning, putting up a season-high 18 hits and 12 runs. The Blue Demons had no answer for the visiting Friars, notching four hits including just one for an extra-base.
DePaul's lone tally came in the second inning after Alvers, who was hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot, scored on a Cosgrove single to left field.
Bella Nigey fell to 5-7 in the circle, surrendering four runs on five hits. As a team, DePaul left five on base.
Game 2 – Providence 5, DePaul 9
The Blue Demons placed a run on the board from the jump as Wohlers' leadoff single came around to score on a Johnson double to right center in the first inning.
Providence evened the score at a run apiece in the fourth after two hits and a Blue Demons error allowed a run to cross on a base hit to right field.
It was a four-run fourth inning that opened it up for DePaul behind big time strikes from Wohlers and Johnson. With one out, Maddy Miklesh was hit by a pitch and later ran for by Gracie Jacobs before Cosgrove drew a walk to put two on at the turn of the lineup. Wohlers send a double to left center to clear the bases and Johnson brought her on home with her fifth home run of the season to make it a 5-1 ball game.
The Friars inched closer in the top of the fifth as a leadoff walk crossed home on a homerun to right field. DePaul answered right back to push the lead back to four as Cosgrove collected her third and fourth RBIs with another double to left field.
The two teams went blow for blow as Providence recorded their second two-run shot of the game in the top of the sixth, but the Blue Demons responded once again with a Sullivan solo homer and a Cosgrove bases-loaded walk.
Smith retired the Friars in order in the seventh to clinch the series victory.
Up Next: The Blue Demons return to action on Friday, April 7 for a BIG EAST doubleheader against Creighton at Cacciatore Stadium. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT on FloSports.
