Blue Demons fall behind early in game two with the Pirates

CHICAGO – An early deficit was once again the culprit for the DePaul softball team as it fell 9-4 to Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium. Four different Blue Demons drove in runs on the day while Carly Alvers, Grace Frazier and Payton Viles notched multi-hit outings.

A two-run homer from the Pirates in the first inning and another tally in the second saw the Blue Demons trail by a trio of runs early.

DePaul (12-23, 4-10 BIG EAST) struck first in the second inning after Alvers sent a double to center and came around on a Frazier lined single to left field.

The Blue Demons would later knot the score in the fifth after Wohlers hit her 11th home run of the season, a blast to right field that ricocheted off a nearby dormitory window. Baylee Cosgrove's base hit came home to score as Alvers lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to even the score 3-3.

Seton Hall (28-12, 11-3) responded in the sixth inning with a trio of hits and a pair of runs before extending their lead to 9-3 in the seventh on a pair of walks, passed ball, base hit and DePaul error.

Looking for a rally in the seventh, Nicole Sullivan notched a leadoff base hit up the middle before Frazier drew a two-out walk. In the next at bat, Viles sent a ball back up the middle to score Sullivan and bring the Blue Demons within four, but nothing else would materialize as the Pirates claimed the victory.

All three active pitchers saw time in the circle for the Blue Demons with Abbey Pochie getting the start and going five and a third inning, surrendering five runs on eight hits. Katey Pierce hurled an inning in relief and surrendered just one earned run on a pair of hits. Senior Brenna Smith closed out the contest, facing three batters and allowing one run.
