Blue Demons can't overcome seven-run deficit
Talbot was one of five DePaul batters who recorded a multi-hit outing including Anna Wohlers, Baylee Cosgrove, Nicole Sullivan and Carly Alvers. Sullivan drove in a trio of runs including two on a bases clearing triple in the seventh inning. Grace Frazier knocked in a pair while Payton Viles and Alvers each pushed a run across.
For the second-straight day, all three active pitchers saw time in the circle for the Blue Demons. Brenna Smith started in the circle and went an inning and a third, surrendering seven runs on four hits. Freshman Abbey Pochie hurled three and a third, allowing four runs on seven hits while Katey Pierce closed out the contest.
How It Happened
- Seton Hall (29-12, 12-3 BIG EAST) grabbed an early 7-0 advantage after tallying seven runs in the second inning capped off by a grand slam
- The Blue Demons responded in the home half with a trio of runs after the bases were loaded on a Pirates fielding error and a pair of walks. A five-pitch walk drawn by Viles brought a run home before Talbot lined a base hit to left center to score two more.
- Four hits and an error brought DePaul three more runs in the third inning to trim the deficit to just one. Sullivan notched a leadoff double down the left field line before Alvers sent a base hit to center and landed at second to put a pair in scoring position. A fielding error allowed Tori Meyer to reach and load the bases for Frazier to bring a run home on a single to left. Talbot followed up with a double to the wall to make the score 7-6.
- Seton Hall pushed their lead to five runs in the fifth inning on four hits and a walk.
- In the sixth inning, Wohlers sparked a three-run rally with a leadoff base hit before Cosgrove notched an infield single and Johnson loaded the bases with a walk. Sullivan drew a five-pitch walk to push a run across and Alvers came to bat and sent a single up the middle to score another run. Frazier's fielder's choice pushed Johnson across and DePaul found themselves within two runs, 11-9.
- The Pirates added more insurance on a two-out, two-run rally in the top of the seventh to claim a 13-9 advantage.
- Looking to extend the contest, Wohlers totaled her second hit of the day and Johnson followed suit for Sullivan to clean up with a two-out triple but the rally stopped there as Seton Hall claimed the sweep.
