Kali Blount earns first career home run in victory
Martin, Tenn. – DePaul (4-4) fell to Purdue Fort Wayne 5-2 in their opening game of the Skyhawk Classic, before defeating host UT Martin by the same score, 5-2.
Pitcher Kelly Greene earned the nod for the first game of the day, with two earned runs on six hits, and four strikeouts. Freshman Ava Gusel entered in relief for the final five batters, allowing just one hit and no runs.
Freshman catcher Zoe Levine logged the first two multi-hit games of her career, and third double of the year, while graduate student Kelly Beaupre notched her 13th career home run against the Mastodons.
Junior Bella Nigey would take to the circle against UT Martin, her first complete game and second win, allowing two runs on six hits. Nigey would also strand seven runners on base, going six scoreless innings after the first frame.
At the plate against the Skyhawks, Kali Blount tallied her first career home run, and senior Addison Talbot had her third multi-hit game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: DePaul 2, Purdue Fort Wayne 5
The second-ever meeting between the Mastodons and the Blue Demons was scoreless early, until a walk and consecutive singles from Morgan Rogers and Levine loaded the bases for the DePaul in the third inning. A sacrifice fly from Carly Alvers drove Rogers home to put the Blue Demons on the board first, but the Mastodons immediately responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth frame.
Sophomore Aglaia Rudd and freshman Addison Zimpleman both launched solo home runs in the sixth inning to give the Mastodons a two-run advantage. First baseman Kelly Beaupre responded with a home run of her own in the bottom of the frame, but Purdue Fort Wayne would tack on two more runs in the seventh, closing their 5-2 win.
Game Two: DePaul 5, UT Martin 2
The Skyhawks plated two runs in the bottom of the first to break open the scoring, after a pair of singles and wild pitches. DePaul found an immediate response, with consecutive hit by pitches and a single from freshman Maya Wondaal loading the bases, allowing a three-RBI double from Baylee Cosgrove to give the Blue Demons a lead.
The Skyhawks would load the bases themselves, after a single and consecutive batters walked, but ultimately left them loaded, with no additional scoring until the top of the fifth frame. A double from Alvers was followed by Blount's first career home run, giving the Blue Demons a three-run lead. No other runs would score, as Nigey went six scoreless innings to propel DePaul to the 5-2 victory.
UP NEXT
DePaul will again travel south to Wilmington, North Carolina for three days of play Feb. 21-23. The Blue Demons will face both Rider and host UNCW twice, concluding their weekend with a single game against UMass.
