Cosgrove drives home five RBI on the day
Wilmington, N.C. – DePaul softball (5-5) defeated Rider 6-1 in the afternoon, before falling to host UNCW 5-2 in their evening game.
Pitcher Kelly Greene earned the nod for the opening matchup, pitching five innings and giving up just four hits and one earned run. Bella Nigey entered in relief against the Broncs, allowing no hits. Greene adds her third win, bringing her to 3-3 on the year.
Freshman Ava Gusel started in the circle against the Seahawks, going 3.2 innings with five hits and one earned run, before Nigey again entered in relief. Nigey was tagged with the loss, her first of 2025.
Baylee Cosgrove stood out at the plate, notching three hits and sending home five RBI, the most RBI by any Blue Demon on a single day this season. Freshman Chelsea Parker earned hits in her first two collegiate at-bats, a double and RBI-single.
Bibianna Rodriguez went three-for-five at the plate, including just her second career triple against UNCW.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: DePaul 6, Rider 1
Rider struck first, driving home a run after a single from Kiersten Buchanan and an RBI double from Maddie Luedtke.
Senior Carly Alvers quickly responded in the second spot for the Blue Demons, sending off a single. Beaupre and Levine reached on a walk and error, respectively, but it was Cosgrove who would send home three RBI with her third double of the year, giving DePaul an early two-run advantage.
Seeing her first collegiate at-bat in the bottom of the fourth inning, Parker would drive home an RBI single, and fellow pinch hitter Lydia Ettema would follow up with an RBI double of her own, extending the DePaul lead to four runs. Later, a second single for Alvers in the bottom of the sixth would drive home freshman Alexis Houge, concluding the 6-1 victory for DePaul.
Game Two: DePaul 2, UNCW 5
Despite a leadoff hit from Cosgrove, the Blue Demons would strand her on base in the opening inning. The Seahawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second frame, led by a single from Maggie Pertee, who, after a Blue Demon error, was brought across the plate by a Grace Hennessy double.
In the top of the fifth inning, Rodriguez tallied her second hit of the day, and Parker followed with a hit of her own to put two runners in scoring position. Cosgrove again came through in a pivotal position, launching a two RBI double down the left field line to knot the game at two runs apiece.
UNCW immediately responded, with Addi Yates reaching base on a single, and Sierra Persinger launching a sacrifice fly to the back wall to send her home. The Seahawks would tack on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, finishing off the 5-2 win for the Seahawks.
