Lydia Ettema logs two hits and two RBI
Jacksonville, Fla. – DePaul softball (7-8) dropped a pair of games Friday afternoon, falling to Mount St. Mary's 1-2 in eight innings, before also falling to Jacksonville by the same score in the afternoon.
Pitcher Bella Nigey earned the start against the Mountaineers, tallying one run and four strikeouts through 4.1 innings of work, while Kelly Greene began the Jacksonville game, allowing two runs in 4.1 innings. Freshman Ava Gusel entered in relief for both outings, allowing one run and notching four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Designated player Lydia Ettema registered two hits and both RBI for the Blue Demons on the day, while junior Alexis Houge contributed her second hit of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: DePaul 1, Mount St. Mary's 2 (8 innings)
DePaul quickly got on the board after an RBI-single from Ettema brought Baylee Cosgrove across the plate, but the Mountaineers would get one back in the second frame, after consecutive walks, a Blue Demon error, and a single from Avery Dinges.
The DePaul pitching staff held strong through the middle of the game, as Nigey struck out the side in the fourth, and Gusel stranded three Mountaineers on base in the fifth, immediately after entering in relief.
It wasn't until extra innings that the Mountaineers would tack on the winning run, bringing across Gallagher from second on an RBI-single from Olivia Murphy.
Game Two: DePaul 1, Jacksonville 2
The Dolphins struck first in the second frame, with a double from Kiersten Stevens and an RBI-single from Jazz Jones to bring her across the plate. They would tack on an additional run in the fifth, after another single from Averi Harcus drove Haley Fox home.
The Blue Demons were on the board after a sacrifice fly from Ettema tallied a run for Houge, but it would not be enough as the Dolphins secured the 2-1 victory.
