Talbot shines with game-winning hit in victory
Pitchers Bella Nigey and Kelly Greene both excelled in the circle, with Greene earning her second win and second complete game in as many days in the afternoon's second game. Senior Addison Talbot posted a single, double, and triple on the day, including driving home the game-winning run against the Leathernecks.
"The close games we've had thus far this season have provided invaluable experience for our team," said head coach Liz Bouck-Jagielski.
"Their determination and belief in one another have led to a hard-fought victory. They are an exciting team to watch and play selflessly for one another. Kelly Greene was exceptional in the circle, and clutch hits by Lydia [Ettema] and Addison [Talbot] locked down our win. DePaul grit truly shined today."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1: DePaul 8, Green Bay 10 (F/8)
DePaul got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, as lead off hitter Baylee Cosgrove was hit by a pitch and Carly Alvers followed up with a double that brought Cosgrove across the plate. Nigey went three scoreless innings with no hits, including retiring the Phoenix in order in the third frame.
Freshman Ava Gusel briefly entered in relief, before Nigey again returned to conclude the fourth. The Phoenix would tally four runs in the frame before Nigey finished it with a strikeout.
The Blue Demons would tack on one more in the fourth, before exploding in the fifth, with freshmen Addi Burdick and Zoe Levine launching near-identical ground-rule doubles to give DePaul a two-run advantage.
The Phoenix went to work in the seventh, with four runs to take the lead, 8-4, but the Blue Demons again battled back. A single from Blount and a triple from Talbot earned another run, before Talbot went across the plate herself to tie up the game on a sacrifice fly from Maya Wondaal.
Green Bay went ahead in the top of the eighth after a hit and a Blue Demon error, and DePaul could not find another run, with the Phoenix taking the 10-8 victory in extra innings.
GAME 2: DePaul 3, Western Illinois 2 (F/8)
A pitcher's duel for the first three innings, the Leathernecks pushed one run across in the fourth.
A single from Talbot proved pivotal, as she made it around the bases after a wild pitch, an error, and a subsequent single from Bibianna Rodriguez in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Greene and McChristy each went five more scoreless innings, with no additional runs coming until the eighth.
After WIU added a run to open the extra inning, Lydia Ettema came up to bat as a pinch hitter for the Blue Demons, with one final out remaining. A passed ball brought Alvers across the plate from second, and consecutive doubles from Ettema and Talbot brought home the winning run.
