Five Blue Demons log home runs on the day
All five members of the regular DePaul pitching staff saw action in the opening game, with Bella Nigey returning to the circle for the start, hurling five innings with no runs and just four hits. Kelly Greene, Hannah Messer, and Ava Gusel all entered in relief, but it was senior Katey Pierce who would be tagged with the loss, her first game this season as the pitcher of record. Pierce allowed two runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Greene, Pierce, and Messer would reappear in the second outing, with Greene earning the start for the Blue Demons. Greene went 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, and registering one strikeout. The Palos Heights, Illinois native moves to 6-8 on the season with the loss. Pierce logged four strikeouts in 2.2 innings, matching her career-high, along with three runs on four hits. Messer concluded the final three frames, conceding just two hits and no runs.
Lydia Ettema shone at the plate, logging two home runs in the afternoon contest, the first Blue Demon this season with a multi-home run performance. Kali Blount, Addison Talbot, Baylee Cosgrove, and Morgan Rogers also tallied home runs on the day. Home runs accounted for eight of DePaul's nine runs across the two games.
Game One: DePaul 6, Providence 11 (10 innings)
DePaul tallied four runs on three hits in each of the first three frames, all home runs, including the second of the week for Talbot.
The Friars opened their scoring in the sixth inning, as Cameron Dunn sent a solo home run straight past the center field wall. A single from Hanna Aldrich and an RBI triple from Gabriella Sebastian brought Providence within two runs late.
Providence then added two more runs with a two-RBI double from Aldrich, and another RBI double from Sofia Peterson. DePaul refused to let the game end, however, and Ettema launched a two-run homer, her second of the day, to force extra innings. The eighth and ninth frames would pass with no runs, before the Friars exploded for five in the top of the tenth, taking the win, 11-6.
Game Two: DePaul 3, Providence 7
Providence was on the board quickly with an RBI double from Emma Eichten earning the Friars a one-run advantage early. The Blue Demons again provided an immediate response, as both Cosgrove and Rogers touched all the bags after consecutive solo home runs.
Dunn drove in a pair of runs in the second frame, Gabriella Lee notched another in the fourth, and Sebastian and Rachael Petrarca logged the final two runs for the Friars.
A double from Talbot would score Ettema in the sixth, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit, and Providence took the second game, 7-3.
OF NOTE
- Three home runs by DePaul in game one of the doubleheader represents a new single-game high for the team
- Sophomore Lydia Ettema is the first Blue Demon to reach three home runs on the year, and first this season to tally multiple in a single game, after she notched only one the entirety of 2024
- The opening game of the day marks DePaul's fourth contest that has gone into extra innings and second ten-inning game, both losses for the Blue Demons
