Cwick knocks second homer of the season in loss
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul softball dropped both games of its doubleheader Friday afternoon on day one of its series against Providence. The Blue Demons fell 17–1 in five innings in game one before mounting a late comeback in game two but ultimately coming up short, 7–6 in game two of the twinbill.
The Blue Demon offense was balanced across the doubleheader. Brooke Cwick notched her second home run of the season in game two, driving in two runs. Sophomore catcher Zoe Levine recorded two hits in three at-bats on the day, and nine different Blue Demons tallied at least one hit across the two games.
In the circle, sophomore Hannah Messer got the start in game one, tossing 1.0 inning before senior Kelly Greene relieved her for 2.0 innings. Gwen Baker covered the final inning of game one. Bella Nigey got the nod in game two and worked 2.2 innings before Messer returned to the circle to close out the contest.
How It Happened
Game 1 – Providence 17, DePaul 1
Providence (10–11, 4–1 BIG EAST) jumped out early with a two-run home run in the first inning and added another on a DePaul error to take a 3–0 lead. The Friars broke things open in the second, plating seven runs to extend the advantage to 10–0.
DePaul (12–17, 3–5 BIG EAST) answered in the third inning as Levine recorded the Blue Demons' first hit of the day, and Chelsea Parker brought her home to put DePaul on the board and cut the deficit to 10–1. Providence responded with a run in the bottom half to push it back to a 10-run ballgame, 11–1.
In the fourth inning,,Jolie Adams led off with a base hit, and Emersyn Coulter reached and stole second to move into scoring position, but DePaul was unable to capitalize.
The Friars added six additional runs in the home half of the fourth to seal the 17–1 series-opening win in five innings.
Game 2 – Providence 7, DePaul 6
DePaul struck early in game two, as Parker led off with a single up the middle. Cwick followed with a two-run home run to left center to give the Blue Demons a 2–0 lead.
The Friars responded with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to take a 3–2 lead, but Nigey worked out of a bases-loaded jam to end the frame. Providence added another run in the third off a throwing error to extend its lead to 4–2.
DePaul answered in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. A pinch-hit sacrifice fly from Addy Poe plated a run to cut the deficit to 4–3. Levine followed with a pinch-hit RBI-single to tie the game at 4–4. Addi Burdick then delivered a pinch-hit RBI to give DePaul a 5–4 lead, and Morgan Rogers added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6–4.
Providence responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead, 7–6, which held as the final score.

DePaul will conclude its series against Providence tomorrow, March 21. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
