DePaul Falls to Hampton on Day Two of Pirate Clash

CHICAGO - DePaul softball fell behind early to Hampton in their first game on day two of the Pirate Clash in Greenville, N.C. The Blue Demons fall to 3-5 overall before they take on host East Carolina later on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Senior pitcher Krista Dalgarn (2-1) had a rocky start in the circle allowing three runs in two innings before freshman Tori Meyer took over.
DePaul would fight back in the third inning when junior shortstop Maranda Gutierrez hit a leadoff double to left field. Sophomore right fielder Taylor Young was hit by a pitch before Gutierrez advanced to third and she advanced to second on a passed ball. Sophomore second baseman Skylor Hilger was walked and bases were loaded. Senior center fielder Angela Scalzitti reached on a fielder's choice and Gutierrez and Young scored.
The Blue Demons were down by one before Hampton tacked on a run in the fourth but for the second day in a row, sophomore Gabby O'Riley launched a homerun to bring DePaul back within one.
While Meyer held the Pirates scoreless, DePaul couldn't find the tying run.

DePaul softball earned their first win of the 2020 Pirate Clash defeating host East Carolina 4-2 on Friday evening in Greenville, N.C. Krista Dalgarn picked up the win while freshman Tori Meyer picked up her first save.
Senior third baseman Erin Andris kept the Blue Demons in check during the second game, getting DePaul on the board with a single in the third to score freshman outfielder Grace Frazier. Andris would later score off a freshman first baseman Brooke Johnson single. DePaul would keep the two-run lead over ECU for two more innings until sophomore designated player Gabby O'Riley launched her first home run of the season and would tally 2 RBI's. The Blue Demons held a 4-0 lead going into the sixth.
Dalgarn faced 25 batters in 5.2 innings, tallying five strikeouts, giving up just four hits and no runs. Meyer faced four batters in 1.1 innings and earned one strikeout.
ECU would tack on two runs to cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth before Meyer would step into the circle and close things out for DePaul.
