Five Blue Demons tally an RBI in 6-4 win

CHICAGO – DePaul softball rallied from down four runs in the third inning to defeat Connecticut 6-4 in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons claimed their sixth win in a row with the victory and improved to 13-7 overall and a perfect 5-0 in BIG EAST play.

Five different DePaul batters tallied an RBI in game two with seniors Maranda Gutierrez and Kate Polucha recording two hits apiece.

Freshman pitcher Julyana Gomez threw a one-hitter in 4.2 innings of work to pick up her second win of the season. Gomez hurled a career-high six strikeouts on the outing.

The top of the third inning saw UConn (13-11, 5-3 BIG EAST) jump out to an early 4-0 lead. The Huskies tallied four hits including an RBI double to center field followed by a three-run homer to center by Briana Marcelino.

In the bottom half of the inning, DePaul got two runs back to cut the Huskies lead in half. Polucha tallied a leadoff single before Jessica Cothern took a base. Brooke Johnson reached on a Husky error while Polucha came home from third. Gutierrez was intentionally walked before Nicole Sullivan drew a two-out walk to force Cothern home.

DePaul's fourth inning rally was jump started by a Polucha triple to center field. Cothern followed up with an RBI double to bring the Blue Demons within a run. Johnson ripped a double to left field to knot the score at four apiece. Gutierrez traded places with Johnson after a double down the right field line to give the Blue Demons the go-ahead run. Gabby O'Riley provided an insurance run with an RBI single to center to bring Gutierrez across the plate.

Gomez blanked the Huskies in the final three innings to clinch the victory for DePaul.
