DePaul Drops Doubleheader at Butler on Saturday Afternoon

Blue Demons fall by a pair of one-run decisions
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – DePaul could not withstand a pair of late rallies from Butler on Saturday afternoon; dropping a double dose of one-run games to open the 2023 BIG EAST slate.
DePaul (8-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) led for five and a half innings in game one before eventually falling 2-1 while game two saw the Blue Demons' one-run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth erased in a 4-3 final decision.
The visitors outhit the Bulldogs a combined 17-12 but struggled to advance the runners, leaving 16 on base on the day.
Game One – DePaul 1, Butler 2
The Blue Demons struck first, hanging a run on the board in the first inning as Addison Talbot and Alexis Houge reached on a hit by pitch and walk, respectively. A Johnson groundout advanced the runners before a wild pitch during Meyer's at bat plated Talbot to give DePaul the 1-0 advantage.
 
Butler (6-18, 2-0) threatened in the fourth with a pair of runners in scoring position, but a Bella Nigey punchout held the Bulldogs at bay.
 
In the fifth inning, Meyer and Wohlers reached second and third but couldn't be advanced as the score remained 1-0 headed into the bottom of the sixth.
 
A leadoff walk proved to be the difference for Butler as a one-out home run put the Bulldogs in front for good, 2-1.
 
Nigey threw the full six innings, allowing six hits and two runs while hurling four strikeouts.
 
Game Two – DePaul 3, Butler 4
DePaul jumped out to a one-run lead once again after Gracie Jacobs tallied a base hit to left field and advanced to third on Johnson's second hit of the day. Wohlers lifted Jacobs across on a sacrifice fly to center field to put DePaul in front 1-0.
 
Butler added runs in the second and third to claim a 2-1 lead before DePaul responded as a Carly Alvers leadoff walk tied the game on Johnson's RBI-single.
 
The Blue Demons reclaimed the lead after back-to-back hits put Meyer on third and Sullivan on second for Cosgrove to bring the lead runner home on a sac fly to right field.
 
A RBI double and two-base RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Butler the 4-3 lead heading into the final frame.
 
Brenna Smith went five and two-third innings allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Abbey Pochie entered in relief and retired the lone batter she faced.
